Gallery # 2

Tuesday, Februray 12, 2008. There is still some green on the field, but the mountain of dirt is growing.

The well-trodden soil near the entrance of the site is getting dug up.

Another view of the digging. Note the photographer's shadow in the foreground.

A trench is being dug near the west end of the property. It will soon be filled in.

A close-up of the trench.

Note the orange painted dots.

The worker's stature give some perspective on the depth of the hole.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the field, workers strapped a chain to a tree in order to tear it down. The tree won, for the moment. The chain broke.

Reinforcements were called in to take down the tree.

Concrete and brick needed to be taken out.

A trench needs to be covered.

February 14, 2008. The trees and the old wall that separated the field from the basketball courts were taken out. The field is gone. The eucalyptus trees in the upper middle of the image will soon be gone, too.

A fiew inches of the topsoil will soon be taken away.

The mountain of topsoil, soon to be taken away, dwarfs the old weight room and the apartments along Cottage Home Street.

The ground is is being scraped when the earth movers go forward and leveled when they go in reverse.

The trees are gone.

The brick wall is gone, too. Equipment from the old weight room sits to the left.

There is a surveyor's tower to make sure just enough soil is removed.

That trench at the West end of the field is now filled with concrete and rebar.

The work is getting done quickly, but much more needs to be done.

This mound of concrete also needs to be taken away.

Exact measurements are taken at every step of the way.

February 15, 2008. This panoramic view of the the East half of the project shows just how much has done. Note the eucalyptus trees are also gone.

The mountain of dirt has grown.

Note how the soil and the asphalt, brick and concrete are separated.

The skyline of Downtown Los Angeles is a backdrop of the project.

Soon, much of this debris will be hauled away, along with the soil, brick, and asphalt.

Removing tree roots leaves a gouge of a hole behind.

Once shaded by the eucalyptus trees, these bushes now gets a full shot of the sun.

Orange spray paint alerts workers of a buried pipe.

Br. Roch standing near the summit of dirt gives perspective of just how much soil has been moved (and will be taken away).
