Track & Field Renovation

Gallery # 13 - April 15-18, 2008

April 15, 2008:  While many Americans are paying their income taxes, the construction crew are busy.  The crane in the background will lower a special container for rainfall runoff.  Meanwhile, students get ready to begin a day.  It will be a challenge to get from the lower part of campus to the upper part.

img382
A curb is being formed on the inner rim of the track, while a worker cuts a pvc pipe to size.

This man is in charge of traffic on the basketball courts.

img384
The crane is getting ready to lower the special piece of plumbing.

img385
A large amount of curb has been already installed on the inner rim of the track.

img386
A cement truck is pouring concrete near to where the rainoff container is being installed.

img387
Cement is being poured down towards the far end of the field.

img388
This mound of dirt will help in the final leveling of the field.

img389
A large storage container that was on the field is now on the basketball court.

img390
This prefabricated chunk of concrete was the object lowered into place by the large crane.

img391
This concrete was poured into a trench.

img392
Note the bootprint in the middle of the pouring.

img393
The ladder gives some perspective to the size of this piece lowered by the crane.

img394
The prefabricated concrete forms will be installed throughout the project.

img395
Note the size of the container and of the piece lowered into the ground.

img396
April 16:  What a difference a day makes!  The fog from the day before has dissipated somewhat.  Meanwhile, the forms have been installed on the inner and the outer rims of the track.

img397
A supervisor oversees the pouring of the concrete for the curbs on the outside of the track.

img398
These workers work fast.

img399
April 18, 2008:  Two days after the curbs were poured along the outside of the track, the wooden forms are gone, the concrete is curing.

img400
It remains for concrete to be poured here.

img401
The track never looked so good... and they have yet to put on the final surface!img402
This drain, flush with the ground, is large.

img403
These concrete pipes will soon be put somewhere to use.

img404
The center of the field still has the bleachers, storage unites, and yet-to-be deployed pipes, conduits, and drains.

img405
The truck unloaded this empty container.

img406
A close-up of the space between the two curbs at the edge of the track is smaller than it looks in this photo.

These pipes and conduit go into this junction box just outside of the "victory tunnel" outside of the new building.

img408
A close-up view of the junction box.

imb409
The curbs are all around the field, except where trucks and equipment come from the basketball court.

img410
The field is level down towards the West end of the field.

img411
The "end zone" has the double curb along the inside of the track.

img412
This is the edge of the property, where the property lines of the apartments, St. Bridget's (See the wrought iron fence to the right), and Cathedral meet.

img413
Down by the corner, near the rectory of St. Peter's, there is the beginning of the track.

img414
St. Peter's lies behind the trees in the center of the photo.

img415
Soon, the ground will be level here, too.

img416
This view is a composite of a number of photos, less than perfectly stitched together.  Still, it gives some perspective of the scope of the project.

img417
Below is the ground between the track curb and the fence.

img418
A view of the track and field from the bleachers.

img419
The filled trench just beyond the inner curb of the track, still needs to be covered.

img420
Most of the debris has been taken away: there is an almost-full dumpster on the field.

img4421
Much of the basketball court is still being used for a staging area and parking for the bus.

img422
There is still an area between the bleachers and the track.

img423
The view from Radio.  One can see the outline of the track.
