Gallery # 16 - May 5 - 11, 2008

May 5, 2008 - The area of the field is flat and ready for the artificial turf to be installed.

At the far end of the field, there are rolls of artificial turf ready for deployment.

Notice the very faint guide line running diagonally from upper left to lower right in the picture.

Meanwhile, the asphalt between the Senior Building and the field needs to be re-done.

Workers plot their next move.

Meanwhile, the concrete floor of the tunnel into the Gym needs to be re-installed.

Yellow twine and orange spray paint will guide those installing the turf.

Some concrete needs to be laid.

This pile of sand needs to be installed, perhaps in the sand pit.

The scoreboard will be installed on these beams.
It will hang out an additional four feet beyond the posts on each side.

Meanwhile, concrete is being installed right up to the fence, beyond the track.

These packages are rolls of artificial turf.

Some colored turf, laid upside down.

This turf will, presumably, be laid elsewhere.

Downtown is in the background of this photo.

More concrete is being laid.

The field awaits the turf.

Our teams will have a real home field next year.

May 6, 2008: Part of the turf has been installed.

Precise measurements need to be taken before and after the artificial turf is laid.

There is still some gravel that needs to be put in place.

Brother John, some parents, and students look on while the turf is being laid.

A close-up of the newly-laid turf. Note the faint line to the left of the large roll of turf.

The turf looks real, even up close.

Mr. Farfan looks on at the newly-laid turf.

The turf needs to be stretched a bit. (It will also need to get a generous dose of a springy composiet of rubber and sand, which will give the field a healthy "bounce.")

Our field will look great, even during a drought.

Note the purple end zone.

There is a gold line before the end zone.

Br. James and Mr. Art López check out the newly-installed turf for themselves.

Mr. López, Mr. Farfan, Br. James, and Br. La Salle pose in the end zone.

This truck is driving around the track.

The end zones will also have the words "CATHEDRAL" and "PHANTOMS" at either end.

The sand will go into a pit used for track and field high jumps.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the field, more work needs to be done near the to-be-constructed walls near the field entrance.

The dirt needs to be broken up.

Prep work is being done for the rest of the field.

A corner of the field.

The gravel base of the field needs to be rolled yet another time.

Workers roll out another roll of artificial turf.

The red line indicates a 25 Yard Line.

This will be filled with sand for track and field activities.

Installing the turf seems to go relatively fast.

Workers need to pull the turf for a snug fit.

Note the tongs used to pull the turf.

One wrinkle could spoil the effect of a perfect playing surface.

A view of a pit for jumps for track and field activities. It will have a cover that will match the track and field.

Sunday, May 11, 2008: Notice the lettering for the end zone nearest the Senior Building. Note also the gold striping for soccer play.

Yard lines are clearly marked. The "C" in an Old English font is a unique feature of this field.

The tield looks nearly done. But much more work needs to be done.

The vehicles are lined up for work tomorrow!

Note the blocked letter "C" at the other 20 Yard Line, as well as the "PHANTOMS" legend in the end zone.
